  15. Anarchie queries Archie servers to find programs stored on FTP sites on the Internet, and then allows you to fetch them directly to your Mac.  It will also allow general browsing of anonymous FTP sites.  It requires System 7 and MacTCP 1.1 or later.

  23. Audiodeck is a very cool audio CD player. It lets you maintain a list of track titles for all of your discs, program the order in which tracks are played, and even extract audio information directly from CDs on capable CD-ROM drives. Audiodeck is a FAT application (68K and PPC).

CDIconKiller is an INIT that attempts to suppress all of those custom icons that people like putting on CD-ROMs. This tends to speed up your CD-ROMs by a factor of about a zillion. Only works with Apple's CD-ROM driver, but it does work under System 6 and 7. Warning: this program was written in 4 hours.

  51. Disinfectant is one of the best anti virus utilities you will ever find for the Mac. It can optionally install an INIT that will protect your Mac, even upon disk inserts. John Norstad won a lot of deserved praise for this essential Mac utility.

DropConversion will convert the file types of any files, regardless of whether you drop one or one thousand files onto it. Additionally, it can set the stationery, visible, locked, and namelocked attributes of files. Finally, DropConversion allows you to install a custom 'vers' ID 2 resource in each file. This is the string that people see when they do a Get Info on files from the Finder.

Icon Gallery is possibly the largest commercial collection of Macintosh icons in the entire world (and probably even the galaxy). There are three collections of icons available: Volume 1 (the original series), Volume 2 (folders, documents, and trashes, oh my!), and Volume 3 (weird, wild, wacky, and wonderful). This sampler shows you many icons from each collection.

  135. MungeImage allows you to mount DiskCopy and DART disk images. You will find a lot of these files on the Apple ftp sites. Using MungeImage means you don't have to have any real floppies. Just drag a disk image onto the MungeImage icon, and it will magically appear on your desktop.

Pict2Pict is a program that move PICTs between the single-file PICT format and PICT resources. It supports drag-and-drop under System 7, but will work under System 6 as well. If you open a PICT file, it will ask for a new resource file to create and put it in. If you open a resource file, it will display each PICT and give you the option of skipping it or saving it. There is a "save all" feature to save a whole range of pictures at once.

ScriptSynch allows you to attach files, scripts, and applications to the launch or quit of programs. This is useful for running a "startup script" whenever an application loads, attaching one application to another so they launch and quit at the same time (Eudora and Nuntius, for example), or tracking application usage through scripting.

  175. suntar is a utility for handling tar files, which you will probably run into on the Internet. Tar, which stands for "tape archive" is a way some people archive lots of files into one big file. It doesn't support compression, just grouping of files.
